How a Skin Cancer Screening Works
Knowledge You Can Trust
When you arrive at your skin cancer screening in Waterloo, we will bring you to an examination room and provide you with a medical gown to change into. Once you have changed, your provider will look over your body for indications of skin cancer or precancerous growths.
Efficient and Convenient
If your provider sees any suspicious moles or lesions, your provider may recommend a biopsy to remove some or all of the tissue and have it sent to a lab for testing. In many cases, the biopsy can be done immediately in the examination room.
Expert Guidance
After the biopsy, your provider will tell you how to care for the wound and when to expect results. When you do receive the results of the biopsy, your provider will give you follow-up instructions and next steps.
Frequently Asked Questions
Anyone can develop skin cancer, but some factors increase your risk. Frequent exposure to UV radiation, by using tanning beds or by spending time outside, especially between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m., can cause damage to skin cells that may eventually lead to skin cancer. Likewise, if you are prone to sunburns or if you live in high altitudes or sunny climates, your risk for skin cancer is increased. If a family member has been diagnosed with skin cancer, you may be at a greater risk
If you notice a new or changing mole, spot, or lesion, schedule an appointment to see your dermatologist.
Yes. Skin cancer is more common on areas of the skin that are exposed to sunlight, due to the damage caused by the sun’s UV radiation, but you can get skin cancer anywhere on your body. This is one of the reasons why skin cancer screenings are a valuable preventative measure to stop skin cancer before it has a chance to spread.
Look over your skin for any new or changing moles, spots, or lesions. Use a mirror to check hard-to-see areas, such as the soles of the feet, between your toes, back, ears, and genital areas. Ask a friend or family member to help you check your scalp.
To tell whether a mole is exhibiting signs of melanoma, remember your ABCDEFs: Asymmetry, Border, Color, Diameter, Evolution, and Funny Looking.
- Asymmetry: One half of the mole does not look like the other.
- Border: The mole’s border is irregular or blurry.
- Color: The mole is multi-colored.
- Diameter: The mole is larger than 6 millimeters, about the size of a pencil eraser.
- Evolution: The mole has started to change in one or more of the categories listed above.
- Funny Looking: The mole looks different or stands out from the rest.
It may also help to take periodic pictures of the area to document any changes over time.
If you notice any of these signs, schedule an appointment to see your dermatologist and have the growth checked out.
